SPOTTED REDFISH FAQ

WHAT IS A SPOTTED REDFISH?

Most redfish have two "spots".  One on each side of its tail.  What TMTanglers call a spotted redfish is a redfish with more than two spots.  For example:

WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT CATCHING A REDFISH WITH MULTIPLE SPOTS?

TMTanglers is all about friendly competition.  With most species of fish the competitive goal is to catch as big a fish as possible using artificial lures.  Redfish are different than most species because they grow so big.  Unlike specks and bass, catching a huge 40 lb redfish isn't particularly unusual if that is what you are trying to catch. Most fisherman target reds between 16'' and 27'' long.  In fact, in most redfish tournaments the goal of anglers is to catch fish that are 26 7/8'' long and as fat as possible.

TMTanglers do not want to target this size fish because 1) these fish are close to breeding size and need to make babies and 2) they do not taste as good as the ideal 18'' red.  But we still need a way to have a friendly competition.  The solution is to try and catch redfish with as many spots as possible.

WHEN I LOOKED AT YOUR TOP 10 BOARD I DIDN'T SEE MANY REDS WITH MULTIPLE SPOTS.  WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

Catching redfish with multiple spots is rare, which is why we chose to try to catch them.  In the event that there is a tie in our competition, the tie-breaker is weight.  Because we just started using this competition in 2004, we haven't caught 10 reds with multiple spots during a TMTangler tournament yet.
