7 Fish Creel Limit
12'' Size Limit
In 2002, we hit Martin just as the first cold front of the year hit. We were faced with strong north winds and frigid temps. Despite the harsh conditions we were able to catch large numbers of fish. This year we were stoked because we felt that we hit the lake at exactly the right time of year. Temperatures were the perfect--lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s. The bass were schooling and it was common to see surface activity all over the lake. Given the conditions I predicted the competitors to catch 30 fish a day. Well, the fishing turned out to be much tougher than expected. Limits were very hard to come by.
At the end of day one Bill Greene and Russell Fackler were the only team to bring in a limit and took a commanding 6 1/2 lb lead. But their finesse worm pattern died on day two, allowing Frank Dixon and Dee Shew to orchestrate a miraculous come-from-behind victory. Their 8-9 day two stringer allowed them to make up the 6 1/2 lb deficit and win the tournament by two ounces. Frank and Dee were able to beat the rest of the field fishing out of a 14' jon boat with a 15 hp outboard. They caught their fish on spinnerbaits and crankbaits in the upper Kowliga area. Congratulations Frank and Dee! Not a bad start for your first tournament!
Big Fish was a 2-9 spot caught by Bill Greene on a zoom finesse worm.
