Lake Wheeler

April 17-18, 2004

Story

TMTanglers fished their spring tournament on Lake Wheeler April 17-18.  Earlier in the week a cold front came through bringing snow and freezing temperatures to the area.  However, for our stay the weather was in the 50s in the morning rising to about 80 degrees at weigh-in.  For once we timed it right and enjoyed great weather!  The lake was at winter pool when we arrived and was at full pool by Saturday afternoon.  Between the changing water temperature and changing water levels, we were fishing some dynamic conditions.  All anglers reported that patterns would not hold from one day to the next.  However, everyone caught plenty of fish.

We had a 7 fish creel limit and 12’’ size limit for this tournament.  Bill Greene of Birmingham and Russell Fackler of Marietta won with a total weight of 20 lbs 8 oz.  Surprisingly low weight for this lake!  They caught fish “junk fishing” in the Second Creek area.  Big fish was won by Lance Granger who caught a 2 lb11 oz largemouth on a Lucky Craft Live Pointer around Elk River.  This is also a surprisingly low weight for this lake!  Trash fish was won by Russell Fackler who caught a 3 lb 4 oz channel cat on a Yo-Zuri crankbait.
