Lake Mitchell

April 9-10, 2005

TMTanglers held its 2005 spring tournament on Lake Mitchell April 9-10.  Clint Jacobs did an excellent job of organizing the tournament and made the smart decision to fish Lake Mitchell while all of the boats from Mark’s tournament were on Lay Lake.

We enjoyed very nice accommodations at Cedar Cove Rentals (www.cedarcoverentals.com).

Alabama Power ran a good supply of current the entire time we were there and the water color had a slight stain to it (i.e. it was perfect).  The weather for prefishing was overcast and a little wet, but everyone reported catches of magnum spots.  Russell Fackler and Bill Greene were feeling confident after prefishing for two hours on Thursday.  In fact, they felt so confident that they brought their 14-7 (5 fish) sack of spots back to the dock to do a little bragging.  The truth is that the magnum spots were just active on Thursday and several of us caught good fish.  The largemouth seemed to be on the beds and were a little tough to catch.

The tournament presented us with bluebird skys and the larger fish were harder to come by.  Nonetheless, Bill and Russell managed to win the tournament with a two day weight of 24 lbs 6 oz.  This is a very impressive catch for our little club.  They also secured big fish with a 3-5 spot, and trash fish prize with a 6-10 flathead catfish.  Their fish were caught fishing up river with white spinnerbaits and jighead finesse worms.

Personally, this is the first time I have been on the lake in over 5 years.  I have to say that the lake looks much cleaner than I remember it looking.  My compliments to the organization that has taken steps to keep the lake clean.  I remember having the same impression when I fishing under Logan Martin dam last summer for the first time in years.   Somebody is doing some hard work cleaning the Coosa up and I am pleased to report that it is paying off.

The Club's next stop is West Point Lake in June.
