SMITH LAKE ALABAMA
June 28, 2008
If Jason Mitchell has learned anything during his rookie season as a TMTangler, it is that catching the biggest five does not always equal a win--at least not if you are fishing a slot limit lake. In both tournaments he has fished this year, had the lake been fished with a regular size limit as opposed to a slot limit, he would have won. But on a slot lake catching the five heaviest bass does not mean that you get to take them to the scale. When conditions are tough, catching the most fish over the size limit does not guarantee a win either. For the Smith Lake tournament Bo and Bill fished for two days and only weighed in one fish over the 15'' limit. However they were able to weigh-in nine bass under the 13'' size limit. All these fish weighed under a pound, including two that were so small they would not register on the scale. But all those ounces added up and were enough to the win. Bo and Bill caught their fish on a small deep diving crankbaits during the day. Bites were scarce for both teams after dark.
