LAKE MITCHELL STORY

The TMT official Fall tournament turned out to be a small event thanks to some business/family commitments and a last minute back out but fun was had by all who attended.  Skip and Jason fished out of Jason’s boat and Benson and Lance fished out of Luther.  Prefishing was limited to Friday due to weather and Friday was no picnic.  Friday was windy, wet and nasty but the fishing was good for Benson and Lance.  Jason struggled to find the bite.  It was the first time in a long time that Lance was able to REALLY use the spinner bait.  Great fun.  Benson caught a nice 3-4 bass on a spot we thought was going to be gold.  The pics make it pretty obvious where we fished.  We had a big steak dinner Friday night and a few too many whiskey drinks.  So we collectively decided to launch at 7:00.  Saturday was nice but there was a pretty serious wind.  Benson and I went with a scrounger / topwater combo.  Benson hooked a fish quickly with the scrounger and soon after I hooked a big boy on the Brian’s Bees dual prop.  He jumped several times, I knew I had good line/good rod so I started horsing him.  He came at us… mouth wide open taking in water.  Then…… “schwing” the old lure was pulled from his mouth.  I didn’t shake that all day.  This happened about 9:00.  We didn’t catch another fish until around 2:30. We had snapoffs, short bites, etc but no fish.  We covered 45 miles Saturday looking for fish.  We came back from Hatchet headed to the area where Benson caught that big fish in practice and something told me to go check the dam.  With little time left it was a 10-20 minute gamble.  We got up there and sure enough the water was running.  Benson and I boated 4 fish in 30 minutes and made it back to the dock literally at 3:15 (weigh in).  We didn’t have anything of size but we had five.  After day 1 we were pretty much still tied.  Day 2 there was a pea soup fog.  I mean thick.  Benson and I idled up to out spot West of Gilchrist island.  We caught one topwater fish in the morning and then ground it out finesse worm style the rest of the day.  Again we missed quite a few fish.  We caught a fish on the dam wall and the others came north of the cabin cove on the West bank.  In the end Benson and Lance pulled it out.  Everyone was BEAT.  Long days with few bites are tough.  Jason pulled out the AOY since Bo decided not to just pay for points.  Great sport…. Or so I thought.  The REAL reason Mr. Crawford didn’t pay is because he didn’t want to mess up his all time ranking.
